High-Quality Open Access Accelerated

In February 2022, ACAMH’s publishing partner, Wiley, announced two new open access agreements to further accelerate open access research. In early February, Wiley and four Japanese institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding on open access publishing. According to Wiley, this new Memorandum of Understanding is intended to be the foundation for a new transformational open access agreement, which will begin in April 2022. This is the first initiative jointly signed by multiple universities in Japan and a major international publisher.

Researchers and members of the following institutions will be able to access all of Wiley’s hybrid and subscription journals, and publish accepted articles open access in all of Wiley’s 1,400 hybrid journals, including ACAMH’s own Journal of Child Psychology & Psychiatry (JCPP) and The Child & Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH) journal.

Following the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding, Wiley signed a further agreement with the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) for a one-year contract extension with an open access option. The Big Ten Academic Alliance is a premier higher education consortium in the U.S. This agreement enables researchers at 13 participating flagship universities, and 17 affiliated campuses, to access all of Wiley’s subscription content, as well as to publish accepted articles open access in all of Wiley’s hybrid open access journals in 2022 – including ACAMH’s JCPP and the CAMH.

The fact that Japanese universities with different attributes gathered and signed such a MoU successfully is epoch-making. It is expected that each university will accelerate open access publishing through a transformational agreement in the coming years. I hope that this signing will prompt not only these four universities but many other universities in Japan to engage in initiatives for the advancement of open access, resulting in further increase of international impact of research from Japan,” said Kazuhiro Hayashi, Director of Research Unit for Data Application at National Institute of Science and Technology Policy.

“We’re pleased to be able to take collective action and partner with Wiley as we explore how to move toward a more open and equitable future,” stated Maurice York, Director, Library Initiatives at the BTAA. “This pilot agreement will allow us to learn more about how the consortium can successfully participate in open access scholarship and make member research available to a broader audience.

On behalf of the BTAA University Librarians, John Wilkin said, “As leaders of our individual libraries, we are enthusiastic about the way that this agreement addresses our institutional interests while ensuring that our collective impact is more than the sum of its parts.”

Prabha Choubina, ACAMH Publications Director, said; “This is great news for our publications and supports our commitment to open science. This development marks another step in advancing the global dissemination of how we understand and approach child and adolescent mental health. We are proud that our hybrid journals, JCPP and the CAMH, are part of these transformational agreements and see this as a step towards a bright future in the distribution of innovative science.”
