Sub-types of insomnia in adolescents: Insights from a quantitative/molecular twin study
Open Access paper from JCPP Advances – ‘Insomnia with short sleep duration has been postulated as more severe than that accompanied by normal/long sleep length. While the short duration subtype is considered to have greater genetic influence than the other subtype, no studies have addressed this question’. Juan J. Madrid-Valero (pic) et al.

Review: Improving access to mental health interventions for children from birth to five years: A Scoping Review
Paper from our CAMH journal – ‘Mental health services specifically designed for children 0–5 years are vital; however, little is known about how these services ensure access for infants at risk of mental health difficulties and their families. This scoping review seeks to address this knowledge gap’. Lyndal Hickey (pic) et al.

Research Review: A systematic review and meta-analysis of nonpharmacological interventions for children and adolescents with selective mutism
Open Access paper from JCPP Advances – ‘Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder that often starts in early years with serious and lasting consequences. This systematic review identifies outcome measures used and outcomes achieved for nonpharmacological interventions for children and adolescents with SM’. Gino Hipolito (pic) et al.

Editorial Perspective: Missing the context: The challenge of social inequalities to school-based mental health interventions

Self-control and grit are associated with school performance mainly because of shared genetic effects
Open Access paper from JCPP Advances – ‘By combining the classical twin design with regression analysis, we investigated the role of two non-cognitive factors, self-control and grit, in the prediction of school performance. We did so at the phenotypic, genetic, and environmental level’. Sofieke T. Kevenaar et al.

Subjective and objective experiences of childhood adversity: a meta-analysis of their agreement and relationships with psychopathology
Open Access paper from the JCPP – ‘Researchers use both subjective self-report and objective measures, such as official records, to investigate the impact of childhood adversity on psychopathology. However, it is unclear whether subjective and objective measures of childhood adversity (a) show agreement, and (b) differentially predict psychopathology. To address this, we conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis to examine the agreement between subjective and objective measures of childhood adversity, and their prediction of psychopathology’. Emma R. Francis (pic) et al.

Open Access paper from the JCPP – ‘The purpose of this review is to focus on the differential susceptibility theory as an alternative explanation of individual differences in mental health and examine its relevance in the treatment of mental health problems in young people’. Elham Assary et al.

The importance and challenges of improving early identification of language abilities: a commentary on Gasparini et al. (2023)
Open Access paper from the JCPP – ‘Finding early predictors of later language skills and difficulties is fraught with challenges because of the wide developmental variation in language. Gasparini et al. (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2023) aimed to address this issue by applying machine learning methods to parent reports taken from a large longitudinal database (Early Language in Victoria Study). This commentary highlights the advantages and challenges of identifying early predictors of language in this way, and discusses future directions that can build on this important contribution.’ Nicola Botting (pic) and Helen Spicer-Cain

Research Review: The multifaceted consequences and economic costs of child anxiety problems: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Open Access paper from the JCPP – ‘Over a quarter of people have an anxiety disorder at some point in their life, with many first experiencing difficulties during childhood or adolescence. Despite this, gaps still exist in the current evidence base of the multiple consequences of childhood anxiety problems and their costs.’ Jack Pollard (pic) et al.
